Andean Community (CAN) presented a platform of registered trademarks

In order to contribute to the strengthening and modernization of intellectual property practices in this part of the continent, the General Secretariat of the Andean Community (CAN) presented the CAN TMview platform, which provides information on the trademarks registered in each of the member countries of the community (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia). The tool was developed with the support of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (Euipo), through its IP Key Latin America Project.
The initiative obeys the provisions of Article 270 of Decision 486, the need to have a computer system that allows the interconnection of the databases of all the national intellectual property offices of the countries that make up the Andean Community. This is how the authorities hope to have safer processes and provide better protection to investors and entrepreneurs who in many opportunities must face the fact that their brand has been registered, by a third party and in the same category, in a neighboring country by appealing to the principle of territoriality.
The first countries that have made all the information related to their trademark registration processes available are Peru and Colombia, for their part, Ecuador is in the process of incorporation and Bolivia is expected to do so shortly.
