Women and Patents in Peru: The Importance of Protecting Intellectual Property

Over the past five years, Peru has experienced a remarkable increase in trademark, patent, and copyright registrations, highlighting the growing importance of intellectual property as a tool to protect businesses, projects, and entrepreneurship. According to the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI) , the main applicants for these services are women engaged in innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity.
Who is filing for patents in Peru?
According to INDECOPI statistics, the participation of Peruvian women inventors in patent applications has grown significantly over the past five years, rising from 31.6% to 58.6%. This growth is driven by their active role in technological and scientific fields, ranging from biotechnology to engineering.
In 2024 alone, 450 patent applications were filed in areas such as chemistry, mechanical engineering, instruments, electricity, and electronics. Of these, 50.11% involved female inventors, consolidating a positive trend from previous years.
The data also reveals that most women inventors are concentrated in Lima (58%), Junín (11%), and La Libertad (6%).
Trademark registration in Peru: Protecting creativity
Throughout 2024, INDECOPI granted 4,564 trademark registrations to women entrepreneurs and business leaders, reflecting a 10% increase compared to 2023. The industries most favored by women registering their brands included clothing, food, education, advertising and business management services, as well as restaurants and hospitality. In addition, collective trademark registrations by Peruvian women grew by 83%, reaching 282 filings.
